Under the direction of the Director of Patient Financial Services the Cashier is responsible for all cash and check payments made to the hospital, including receipts made in person and mail receipts, and appropriately posting them to patient accounts receivable and non‑patient accounts receivable. The cashier is also responsible for preparing the daily bank deposit and the security of patient valuables. Also, monthly, bills client accounts and prepares the Medicare Bad Debt Logs.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
Effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, staff members, patients, patient families, outside agencies and the general public. This would include the pediatric client, the adolescent client, the young‑middle aged adult client and the geriatric client.
Manages cash flow for the corporation:
Maintain control of all cash and check receipts.
Prepares bank deposits for entire hospital
Handles daily vending and cafeteria monies
Balance out cash received against receipts
Controls Petty Cash receipts and deposits
Daily goes to the bank and picks up the Lock Box
Post patient payments Via EDI
Insures proper posting of all receipts to the appropriate accounts
Receives payments at the cashiers office and responds to patient concerns relating to balances and billing questions for the Accounts Receiveable.
Secure and maintain appropriate record of patient valuables held in safekeeping:
Accepts and releases patient valuables from safe located in the cashiers office and switchboard.
Maintains appropriate records
Bills Client Accounts:
Collects and posts charges for the monthly billing of Client accounts
Monthly sends out the bills to the clients
Receives and posts all payments on Client bills
Responsible for all follow-up on client bills.
Medicare Bad Debt Log:
Collects all names of Medicare Bad Debt Accounts (Sent to Collection Agency)
Maintains Medicare Bad Debt Log for use in the Medicare Cost Report.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:
High school diploma or general education degree (GED); or one to three months related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in one‑on‑one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization.
OTHER SKILLS and ABILITIES:
Knowledge of medical terminology. Calculator skills. Accurate typing skills and computer keyboard skills. Ability to work in a highly stressful environment.
