Status: Part Time - 20 hours a week
To provide courier service to pick up laboratory specimens from physician offices and deliver to the laboratory reporting to the Accession Distribution section head, laboratory administrative director or medical director.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
The courier is responsible for following all the laboratory's established policies and procedures, and those of the hospital.
Responsible for coordinating and monitoring laboratory specimens collected in offices and delivering them to the laboratory.
Timely and accurate pick-up and delivery of office specimens.
Safe and proper handling of specimens.
Practice of safe and defensive driving to ensure, in as far as possible, that no injury or accident occurs in the course of business. This includes representing the hospital by being courteous to other drivers while on duty in the company vehicle.
Communication and resolution of issues that may come up during the courier process.
Establishing good rapport and customer service with the lab and all office personnel through efficient and timely delivery.
Accurate and timely completion of any required reports.
Other responsibilities, duties or projects as assigned. This may include picking up or delivering hospital items when picking up lab specimens at the physician offices. This could expand into duties for other departments of the hospital that require pickup or delivery.

Good communication skills.
Present a good image for the organization to the customers and community.
Neat and personable, able to work diplomatically with patients, visitors, physicians and their office personnel, business representatives, and other hospital employees.
Efficiency, organization, and accuracy are essential
Willingness to train and learn skills to assist customers including but not limited to questions concerning specimen handling.
Good time management skills.
Professional and ethical judgment.
High school diploma or equivalent and at least 18 years old.
Must have a valid driver's license and clean driving record. A transportation vehicle will be provided by the hospital.
Must have personal cell phone for use.
Previous medical experience is helpful.
The courier must successfully complete an orientation checklist.
Schedule may vary. Dependability for attendance is necessary.
Workload may be heavy at times.

Manual dexterity, organization, ability to work without direct supervision, and dependability for accuracy are essential. The employee will be responsible for handling biological materials. Considerable mental effort required; must have ability to manage multiple tasks under pressure of time and distraction, occasionally with long hours.
The employee must be able to handle an average amount of walking, standing, and bending, and must occasionally lift up to 50 pounds. The employee must possess adequate vision and hearing to safely perform their job functions. The employee must have the hearing abilities to communicate with patients to assure accuracy and patient safety, to easily hear auditory alarms and be able to communicate with coworkers and outside professionals. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
The work environment is that encountered while performing the essential duties described. The noise level is usually moderately high.
