Cares for patients in the Operating Room/Endoscopy under the direction of the Registered Nurse and supervision of medical staff.  Works to facilitate the safe and effective conduct of invasive surgical procedures ensuring the operating room environment is safe, that equipment functions properly, and that the operative procedure is conducted under conditions that maximize patient safety.

The patient population would include:  the neonate patient, the pediatric patient, the adolescent patient, the young-middle aged adult patient, and the geriatric patient.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following.  Other duties and responsibilities may be assigned as needed within the scope of responsibility.

  • The surgery technician provides care based on awareness of patient rights, ethical concepts, respect for life, dignity, human worth and the individuality of the human being.
  • Demonstrates accountability by completing mandatory work on time.
  • Cooperates with other personnel to maintain effective teamwork relationships.
    • Adapts to changes in the workload, and demonstrates flexibility according to the surgery schedule
    • Works with circulator setting up room to provide quality care.
    • Assists other team members in the clean up of the OR room and assists with the transport of the patient to PACU if needed.
  • Participates in economical utilization of supplies and equipment. (procedures; manages assigned inventory for appropriate PAR and outdates)
  • Demonstrates understanding of role in hospital emergencies, fire and disaster drills.
  • Performs effectively in crisis and emergency situations.
  • Assumes responsibility for ensuring continued professional growth for improvement of patient care through initiative, adaptability and self-learning for new equipment and procedures. 
  • Reflects cooperative attitude and behavior.
  • Is willing to adjust personal schedule in order to complete workload in view of an increased schedule, late surgical procedures or staffing reduction.
  • Coordinates work to achieve maximum productivity and efficiency
    • Makes an assessment of and determines the total needs of the procedure to be performed.
    • Is adequately prepared to start cases on time.
    • Anticipates and prepares for possible or probable complications.
    • Uses time effectively

Prepares rooms with appropriate instruments, sutures, supplies, and equipment necessary for each individual surgical procedure.

  • Handles the instruments, supplies, and equipment necessary during the surgical procedure.
  • Has an understanding of the procedure being performed and anticipates the needs of the surgeon.
  • Has the necessary knowledge and ability to ensure quality patient care during the operative procedure
  • Demonstrates thorough knowledge of sterile technique by monitoring and maintaining the sterile field, and following policies and procedures for sterilization of instruments and supplies.

Effectively functions as the scrub person for the surgical procedure:

  • Checks supplies and equipment needed for surgical procedure
  • Scrubs, gowns, gloves
  • Sets up sterile table with instruments, supplies, equipment, and medications/solutions needed for procedure
  • Performs appropriate counts with the circulator at a minimum prior to the operation and before the incision is closed
    • Knows legal responsibilities and the reason for 100% accurate sponge counts.
    • Verbalizes procedure for an incorrect sponge count.
  • Gowns and gloves surgeon and assistant
  • Helps in draping the sterile field
  • Passes instruments, etc., to surgeon during procedure
  • Maintains the highest standard of sterile technique during procedure
  • Properly handles all surgical specimens
  • Prepares sterile dressings
  • Cleans and prepares instruments for terminal sterilization
  • Assists other members with terminal cleaning of operating room
  • Assists in prepping room for the next patient
  • Obtains appropriate sterile and unsterile items needed for procedure
  • Opens sterile supplies
  • Actively participates in "Time Out"
  • Assists with patient transfers as needed
  • Assesses comfort and safety measures and provides verbal and tactile reassurances to the patient
  • Anticipates additional supplies needed for the procedure
  • Properly handles specimen
  • Secures dressing after incision is closed

Role of Second Scrub:

  • Holds retractors or instruments as directed by the surgeon
  • Sponges or suctions the surgical site
  • Cuts suture material as directed by the surgeon

On Call responsibilities: 

  • Takes fair share of monthly call and the holiday rotation.
  • When on call, remains near a phone, and/or carries a pager and notifies the Nursing Supervisor of method to be reached.
  • Responds to work within 30 minutes of notification without questions. 

Maintains a positive communication:

  • Demonstrates effective communication and collaboration skills with perioperative team members.
  • Assists in originating and updating preference cards by communicating physician requests and procedure changes to the appropriate surgery staff to communication to all surgery scrub/circs.
  • Maintains privacy confidentiality of all appropriate information.

Will acquire Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification within 6 months of hire and maintain certification.



  • Graduation from an accredited school of Surgical Technology.


  • Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) by the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assistants (NBSTSA).
  • Membership with Association of Surgical Technologists (AST)

Ability to see suture and differentiate color and type, ability to see video camera color, ability to read fine print on labels, peripheral vision for monitoring surgical activities and movement of equipment, ability to see for assembling instruments following sterilization in multiple pieces, and ability to read computer screens.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee occasionally works near moving mechanical parts, exposed to blood and body fluids, and risk of electrical shock, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, risk of electrical shock, and risk of radiation.  The surgery unit has monitors, computers, cautery equipment, drills, saws, autoclaves, professional and patient traffic that affects the work environment.

The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
