To perform specimen collection, processing and other support functions reporting to the Team Leader, Section Head, Laboratory Administrative Director or Medical Director


Good customer service skills required.

Interprets and reviews orders, specimen or test preparation requirements, instructs patients or nursing personnel, prepares requisitions or enters orders and other data into Laboratory Information System.  Monitors orders for specimen collection in LIS.

Monitoring of faxes for result reporting.

Collects venous and capillary blood specimens and nasal swabs.  Must be able to interact with and perform standard specimen collection procedures effectively on neonatal, pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric patients, understanding and reacting effectively to their individual and unique needs.

Responsible for communicating with reference laboratory.

Maintains supplies and inventory.

Maintains cleanliness and orderliness of work areas, processing area, phlebotomy work areas and equipment such as workbenches, specimen collection trays, refrigerators and storage sites.  This position requires good organization skills and can be very fast paced.

Responsible for knowing how to collate, route and distribute reports and other correspondence and materials as required.

Other duties may be assigned as appropriate.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Formal phlebotomy training with certification or comparable program certification (ex. Medical Office Assisting) which includes phlebotomy training. The job involves basic keyboarding and computer skills and previous medical experience is helpful.

The employee must successfully complete an orientation checklist and satisfactory performance assessment within 3 months of hire date.

The employee is required to be neat and personable, able to work diplomatically with patients, visitors, physicians and their office personnel, business representatives, and other hospital employees

 Must be able to respond  to emergency situations during off-hours.  Dependability for attendance is necessary.  Occasional weekend and overtime work may be required, as well as coverage of all schedules and shifts where necessary.

Manual dexterity, organization, ability to work without direct supervision, and dependability for accuracy are essential.  The employee may perform/assist with painful clinical work and/or handling of biological materials.  Considerable mental effort required; must have ability to manage multiple tasks under pressure of time and distraction, occasionally with long hours.

The employee must be able to handle an average amount of walking, standing, and bending, and must occasionally lift up to 50 pounds.  The employee must possess adequate vision and hearing to safely perform their job functions.  The employee must have the hearing abilities to communicate with patients to assure accuracy and patient safety, to easily hear auditory alarms and be able to communicate with coworkers and outside professionals.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

The work environment is that encountered while performing the essential duties described.  The noise level is usually moderately high.
